Methodology

ASN classification

How ASN metadata and network-type labels are normalized for monthly release files.

ASN role

ASN context explains which autonomous system is associated with a prefix. It provides network ownership, operational, and routing context.

Classification inputs

  • ASN identifier
  • ASN name or description
  • ASN country
  • ASN type labels
  • Company or organization aliases where available
  • Routing and prefix footprint behavior

Network type examples

Common labels include hosting, ISP, business, education, government, mobile, bogon, and unknown.

Special ASN values

  • -1 represents not available or not applicable.
  • -2 represents bogon scope.

Why this matters

ASN classification allows analysts to understand not only where a prefix is geolocated, but also the type of network operating it.
